Tablet
Treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF); other progressive fibrosing interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) and systemic sclerosis–associated ILD (SSc-ILD) where prescribed; may also be used in combination with docetaxel for advanced non‑small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after first‑line chemotherapy (as per specialist advice).
Nintedanib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that blocks multiple receptors involved in fibrosis and abnormal vessel growth, including VEGFR, FGFR and PDGFR. By inhibiting these pathways it slows fibroblast activity and tissue scarring in the lungs, helping to reduce decline in lung function.
Oral tablet/capsule equivalent: take exactly as prescribed by a specialist. Usually taken twice daily about 12 hours apart with food and swallowed whole with water; do not crush or chew. If a dose is missed, skip it and take the next dose at the usual time; do not double the dose.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, weight loss, increased liver enzymes (ALT/AST), headache, fatigue
Prescription-only anticancer/antifibrotic medicine. Liver toxicity: monitor LFTs before and during treatment; dose interruption/reduction may be needed. Diarrhoea and dehydration can be serious—start antidiarrhoeal therapy and maintain fluids. Increased risk of bleeding; use caution in patients on anticoagulants/antiplatelets or with bleeding disorders. Risk of arterial thromboembolic events; caution in patients with cardiovascular disease. Gastrointestinal perforation and impaired wound healing reported—use caution around surgery. Not recommended in severe hepatic impairment; caution in moderate hepatic impairment. Contraindicated in pregnancy; effective contraception required during treatment and for a period after stopping as advised by doctor.
P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, erythromycin, clarithromycin) may increase nintedanib levels; P-gp/CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, St John’s wort) may decrease effect. Additive bleeding risk with anticoagulants (warfarin, heparins, DOACs) and antiplatelets (aspirin, clopidogrel). Caution with hepatotoxic drugs due to increased liver injury risk.
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
