Uses & Benefits
Type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycaemic control, alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medicines along with diet and exercise
How It Works
Vildagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor that increases incretin levels (GLP-1 and GIP), leading to glucose-dependent insulin release and reduced glucagon secretion. This lowers blood glucose with a low risk of hypoglycaemia when not used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth as prescribed, with or without food, usually once or twice daily depending on regimen. Continue diet and exercise; monitor blood sugar regularly. If combined with a sulfonylurea/insulin, hypoglycaemia precautions may be needed.
Side Effects
Headache, dizziness, tremor, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, upper respiratory tract infection, hypoglycaemia (more likely with sulfonylurea/insulin)
Warnings & Precautions
Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Monitor liver function as advised; discontinue and consult doctor if jaundice, dark urine or persistent nausea occurs. Rare risk of pancreatitis; seek medical help for severe persistent abdominal pain. Use caution in moderate to severe renal impairment and in heart failure patients as per clinician advice.
Drug Interactions
Insulin and sulfonylureas (increased hypoglycaemia risk), other antidiabetics (additive glucose-lowering), ACE inhibitors (rare increased risk of angioedema reported with DPP-4 inhibitors)
