Uses & Benefits
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), especially when single-drug therapy is inadequate; helps reduce risk of stroke in certain patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (as advised by doctor).
How It Works
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels by blocking AT1 receptors, lowering blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that increases urine output to reduce fluid and salt load, further lowering blood pressure.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food. Swallow whole with water; do not stop abruptly without medical advice. Your doctor may monitor BP, kidney function and electrolytes.
Side Effects
Dizziness, headache, fatigue, increased urination, low blood pressure, nausea, muscle cramps, increased blood urea/creatinine, low potassium or sodium, increased uric acid
Warnings & Precautions
Not recommended in pregnancy (can harm fetus) and should be avoided, especially in 2nd/3rd trimester. Use caution in kidney disease, liver disease, dehydration, low salt states, gout, diabetes, and in elderly; may cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected. Monitor electrolytes (potassium, sodium), kidney function and blood pressure regularly. Seek urgent care for swelling of face/lips/throat (angioedema) or severe dehydration.
Drug Interactions
ACE inhibitors/aliskiren (increased risk of kidney impairment and high potassium; avoid in diabetes with aliskiren), potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics (hyperkalemia), NSAIDs (reduced effect and kidney risk), lithium (toxicity), other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), steroids/diuretics (electrolyte imbalance), antidiabetic medicines (may alter glucose control), alcohol (increased dizziness)
