Allergic rhinitis (sneezing, runny/blocked nose, itchy/watery eyes), allergy-related cough and wheeze; as adjunct in allergy-triggered asthma symptoms in children as advised by doctor
How It Works
Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks inflammatory mediators (leukotrienes) responsible for allergy and bronchoconstriction. Levocetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine that blocks H1 receptors, reducing sneezing, itching, and watery eyes.
Directions for Use
Oral syrup. Give the dose exactly as prescribed by the pediatrician, preferably at the same time each day; can be taken with or without food. Shake well before use and measure with a proper measuring cup/spoon. Do not use as a rescue medicine for sudden asthma attacks.
Use only under pediatric supervision. May cause drowsiness—avoid activities requiring alertness. Montelukast has been associated with mood/behavior changes (irritability, agitation, nightmares, sleep disturbance; rarely depression/suicidal thoughts); seek medical advice if these occur. Use with caution in liver disease and in children with a history of neuropsychiatric symptoms. Not for acute bronchospasm/status asthmaticus.
Drug Interactions
Other CNS depressants/sedating medicines may increase drowsiness. Enzyme inducers such as rifampicin, phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine may reduce montelukast levels. Alcohol may enhance sedation (relevant for caregivers/adolescents).
