Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to help quit smoking and relieve nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings in tobacco dependence
How It Works
Nicotine polacrilex releases nicotine slowly when the gum is chewed and absorbed through the lining of the mouth. This provides controlled nicotine levels to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms while you stop smoking, without exposure to tobacco smoke toxins.
Directions for Use
Chew-and-park method: Chew slowly until a tingling/peppery taste appears, then park between gum and cheek; repeat for ~30 minutes. Use 4 mg strength for those who smoke their first cigarette within 30 minutes of waking or who have strong cravings. Typically 1 gum when craving occurs (about every 1–2 hours initially), then gradually reduce; do not exceed the maximum number of gums per day as advised on label/doctor. Avoid eating or drinking (especially acidic beverages like coffee/soft drinks/juice) for 15 minutes before and during chewing.
For adult smokers/tobacco users; not for non-smokers. Do not smoke or use other nicotine products concurrently unless advised by a doctor (risk of nicotine overdose). Use with caution and seek medical advice if you have heart disease (recent heart attack, arrhythmias, angina), uncontrolled high blood pressure, stroke, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, pheochromocytoma, or severe liver/kidney disease. Chewing too fast can cause nausea or hiccups. Keep out of reach of children; nicotine is toxic if swallowed. If dentures/TMJ problems, gum may be difficult to use. Stop and seek help if symptoms of overdose occur (nausea, vomiting, sweating, palpitations, dizziness).

Drug Interactions
May alter effects of medicines affected by smoking cessation (e.g., theophylline, clozapine, olanzapine, caffeine, warfarin) because stopping smoking changes CYP1A2 activity. Caution with other nicotine products (patch/lozenge), and with drugs that increase heart rate/blood pressure. Consult doctor if on antidiabetic therapy as dose adjustment may be needed after quitting smoking.
