Drug | Tablet
Treatment of epilepsy (partial/focal seizures with or without secondary generalization); may be used alone or as add-on therapy as prescribed.
Oxcarbazepine is an antiepileptic medicine. Its active metabolite blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in the brain, stabilizing overactive nerve membranes and reducing abnormal electrical activity that causes seizures.
Tablet (oral). Take exactly as prescribed, usually 1–2 times daily, with or without food; take at the same time each day. Swallow with water. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice; dose is usually titrated up and tapered down if needed.
Dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, blurred/double vision, unsteadiness (ataxia), tremor, hyponatremia (low sodium)
Prescription-only (Schedule H). May cause dizziness/drowsiness—avoid driving or operating machinery until you know the effect. Risk of low blood sodium (hyponatremia), especially in elderly or with diuretics—monitor sodium if symptomatic (confusion, weakness, seizures). Serious skin reactions (SJS/TEN) and hypersensitivity can occur; stop and seek urgent care if rash, fever, mouth sores, swelling, or breathing trouble. Use with caution in kidney impairment (dose adjustment may be needed). Rarely may increase suicidal thoughts/behavior—seek help if mood/behavior changes. Do not discontinue abruptly to avoid seizure worsening.
Hormonal contraceptives (reduced efficacy), phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, valproate, lamotrigine, topiramate, levetiracetam (monitor clinically), diuretics/SSRIs (increased hyponatremia risk), alcohol/CNS depressants (additive drowsiness), CYP3A4 substrates (possible reduced levels)
