Allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis (hay fever), urticaria (hives), itching and other hypersensitivity reactions; also used as an appetite stimulant when prescribed
Cyproheptadine is a first-generation antihistamine that blocks H1 receptors, reducing allergy symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes and itching. It also has antiserotonergic activity, which can increase appetite in some patients.
Oral syrup. Take only as directed by the physician; measure with a dosing cup/spoon. Can be taken with or without food; if it causes stomach upset, take with food. May cause drowsiness—prefer taking in the evening if advised and avoid driving.
Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, nausea, increased appetite, weight gain
May cause marked drowsiness/sedation—avoid driving or operating machinery. Use with caution in glaucoma, enlarged prostate/urinary retention, asthma/COPD, liver disease, and in elderly patients. Not recommended in newborns/premature infants; use in children only on medical advice. Do not use with MAO inhibitors; avoid other sedatives unless prescribed. Seek urgent care for severe allergic reaction, breathing difficulty, or severe confusion.
Alcohol and other CNS depressants (sedatives, benzodiazepines, opioids) increase drowsiness; MAO inhibitors (e.g., selegiline, linezolid) may enhance anticholinergic/CNS effects; other anticholinergics (e.g., tricyclic antidepressants) may increase dry mouth/constipation/urinary retention
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from light. Do not freeze. Keep bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
