Monograph
Telmisartan (40mg) + Metoprolol Succinate (50mg)
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); reduction of cardiovascular risk (heart attack/stroke) in high-risk patients when appropriate.
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that blocks AT1 receptors. This relaxes blood vessels, lowers aldosterone effects, reduces blood pressure and decreases strain on the heart.
Oral tablet: take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food; swallow with water. Do not stop abruptly without medical advice.
Dizziness, headache, fatigue, low blood pressure, increased potassium (hyperkalemia), nausea
Avoid use in pregnancy (risk of fetal harm). Use with caution in kidney disease, renal artery stenosis, dehydration/low salt state, and liver impairment. Monitor blood pressure, kidney function (creatinine) and serum potassium, especially after starting or dose changes. Risk of hypotension particularly in volume-depleted patients. Do not use with aliskiren in diabetes; caution in heart failure.
Potassium supplements/potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, eplerenone, amiloride), ACE inhibitors or other ARBs, aliskiren, NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, diclofenac) may reduce effect and worsen kidney function, lithium (increased toxicity), diuretics (additive hypotension)
