Uses & Benefits
Relief and prevention of bronchospasm in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness due to reversible airway obstruction
How It Works
Salbutamol is a short-acting beta-2 agonist that relaxes bronchial smooth muscles to quickly open the airways. Theophylline is a bronchodilator (methylxanthine) that helps relax airway muscles and may reduce airway responsiveness, improving breathing.
Directions for Use
Oral syrup. Take exactly as prescribed by the doctor; dose is based on age, weight and response. Can be taken with or without food; taking after food may reduce stomach upset. Use a measuring cup/spoon; do not exceed prescribed dose.
Use only on medical advice. Overdose can cause serious effects (severe palpitations, vomiting, seizures, arrhythmias). Caution in heart disease, high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, seizure disorders, liver disease, and in elderly. Theophylline levels can be affected by fever, smoking, and many medicines; monitoring may be required for prolonged use. Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe dizziness, worsening breathlessness, or allergic reactions.
Drug Interactions
Macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin/clarithromycin), fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin), cimetidine, oral contraceptives, fluvoxamine (increase theophylline levels); rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, smoking (decrease theophylline levels); beta-blockers may reduce salbutamol effect; other sympathomimetics, caffeine, and xanthines increase side effects; diuretics/corticosteroids may increase risk of low potassium with salbutamol
