Uses & Benefits
Treatment of edema (fluid retention) associated with heart failure, liver disease or kidney disease; also used for management of hypertension when prescribed.
How It Works
Torsemide is a loop diuretic. It blocks sodium and chloride reabsorption in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, increasing urine output and reducing excess fluid and blood pressure.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth as prescribed, usually once daily (preferably in the morning) with or without food. Avoid taking late in the day to prevent nighttime urination; follow doctor’s dose adjustments and monitoring advice.
Side Effects
Increased urination, dizziness, low blood pressure, dehydration, headache, weakness, nausea, electrolyte imbalance (low potassium/low sodium), muscle cramps
Warnings & Precautions
Use with caution in kidney or liver impairment, dehydration, low blood pressure, diabetes, gout (may increase uric acid) and electrolyte disturbances. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function and electrolytes (especially potassium, sodium, magnesium) is advised. Excessive diuresis can cause dehydration and fainting; avoid driving if dizzy. Seek medical help for severe weakness, confusion, irregular heartbeat, hearing changes, or allergic reactions (sulfonamide-related hypersensitivity possible).
Drug Interactions
ACE inhibitors/ARBs (additive hypotension), other antihypertensives, NSAIDs (reduced diuretic effect/kidney risk), lithium (increased lithium toxicity), digoxin (arrhythmia risk with low potassium), corticosteroids/amphotericin B (more potassium loss), aminoglycosides/cisplatin (increased ototoxicity risk), other diuretics
