Blood Pressure by Age — Chart & Checker

Blood pressure tends to rise gradually with age, but the threshold for 'high' is the same across adults: 130/80 and above is raised. Enter your reading below to classify it, and see the typical blood-pressure ranges by age group in the chart on this page. Use age ranges as context, not as a higher 'allowed' target.

Frequently asked questions

Does normal blood pressure change with age?+

Average blood pressure rises with age, but the medical threshold for hypertension (130/80 under current guidelines) does not go up with age. An older adult with 150/90 still has hypertension — it shouldn't be dismissed as 'normal for their age', though treatment targets are individualised.

What is a normal blood pressure by age?+

Healthy adults of any age aim for under 120/80. Readings tend to run a little higher in older age, but anything 130/80 or above is raised. Children and teenagers use age-, sex- and height-based percentiles rather than fixed adult numbers.

What is a normal blood pressure reading for Indian adults?+

Under 120/80 mmHg is normal. 120–129/under 80 is elevated. 130–139/80–89 is Stage 1 hypertension. 140/90 or above is Stage 2 hypertension. Above 180/120 is a hypertensive crisis — seek emergency care. These thresholds follow JNC8 and Indian Society of Hypertension guidance.

How accurate is a home BP monitor?+

Validated upper-arm digital monitors (Omron, Microlife, Beurer) are accurate to within ±3 mmHg when used correctly. Wrist monitors are less reliable. Take 2–3 readings a minute apart while seated quietly with feet flat — the average is your real reading.

What's the difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure?+

Systolic (the top number) is the pressure when your heart contracts. Diastolic (the bottom number) is the pressure when your heart relaxes between beats. In adults over 50, systolic is generally the more important predictor of heart-disease and stroke risk.

When should I see a doctor about my BP?+

See a doctor if your reading is consistently 140/90+ across days, is 180/120+ (urgent), comes with chest pain, severe headache, vision changes or breathlessness, or is 130/80+ when you have diabetes or kidney disease. PingMeDoc can connect you with a doctor for teleconsultation.
