Ibuprofen 200 mg/5 ml Syrup — Dose by Weight

This calculator is pre-set to the 200 mg/5 ml strength (40 mg of ibuprofen per ml) — a higher-strength paediatric ibuprofen suspension. Enter your child's weight to get the dose in millilitres, with safe spacing and a 24-hour limit. Double-check the concentration on your bottle, as 100 mg/5 ml is also common.

Check your bottle: 200 mg / 5 ml

This page assumes a 200 mg/5 ml (40 mg/ml) syrup. If your bottle reads 100 mg/5 ml, change the strength in the calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much 200 mg/5 ml ibuprofen for a 16 kg child?+

At 10 mg/kg a 16 kg child needs about 160 mg per dose. 200 mg/5 ml syrup is 40 mg/ml, so that is roughly 4 ml. Confirm the strength on your bottle and check with your paediatrician.

How is a child's ibuprofen dose calculated by weight?+

Paediatric ibuprofen is dosed at about 10 mg per kg of body weight per dose, every 6–8 hours as needed, with a maximum of 40 mg/kg (and usually no more than 4 doses) in 24 hours. The calculator converts that mg dose into millilitres for the syrup strength you select.

Is ibuprofen dosed by age or weight?+

Weight gives a far more accurate paediatric dose than age. Always dose by the child's current weight where possible.

At what age can a child take ibuprofen?+

Ibuprofen is generally not recommended for babies under 3 months or under 5–6 kg, and should be avoided in dehydration, chickenpox, or known kidney problems. For young infants, check with your paediatrician and consider paracetamol instead.

Can I give ibuprofen and paracetamol together?+

They can sometimes be alternated under medical advice for a high fever, but they should not be given at the same time without a doctor's guidance. Never exceed the maximum dose of either medicine.

When should I seek urgent care instead?+

Seek urgent care for a baby under 3 months with fever, or any child with breathing difficulty, severe drowsiness, repeated vomiting, dehydration, a seizure, or suspected overdose. This tool is informational and does not replace a clinician.
