About cholesterol & lipid testing
Cholesterol is a fat your body needs in small amounts. But when LDL ("bad") cholesterol climbs and HDL ("good") falls, it deposits in your artery walls and slowly narrows the blood vessels feeding your heart and brain. The standard Lipid Profile measures total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides and the VLDL fraction — enough for most healthy adults.
If you have a family history of heart disease, diabetes or have had a previous cardiac event, the standard panel may understate risk. Apolipoprotein B (Apo-B) directly counts the cholesterol-carrying particles that cause atherosclerosis, often more accurately than LDL. High-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) catches the low-grade vascular inflammation that triggers heart attacks. These add-ons are recommended for anyone with intermediate cardiovascular risk on standard scoring.
Triglycerides reflect recent diet, alcohol and metabolic syndrome — a fasted morning sample is essential for an accurate reading.
