Important Warnings

Risk of hypoglycaemia (more likely with missed meals, alcohol intake, strenuous exercise, elderly, kidney/liver impairment); do not skip meals. Metformin may rarely cause lactic acidosis—seek urgent care for rapid breathing, severe weakness, abdominal pain, or drowsiness. Use caution/avoid in severe renal impairment, severe liver disease, alcoholism, dehydration, severe infection, shock, or hypoxic states. Temporarily stop metformin before/after iodinated contrast procedures and major surgery as advised. Inform doctor if pregnant/planning pregnancy; may require insulin. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
