Treatment of anxiety disorders, short-term relief of severe anxiety symptoms, panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia) as prescribed by a psychiatrist/physician

Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This reduces excessive nerve activity, producing anxiolytic, sedative and muscle-relaxant effects.

Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Usually taken once to multiple times daily; may be taken with or without food. Swallow tablet whole with water; do not abruptly stop—dose should be tapered under medical supervision.

Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, impaired coordination, slowed reaction time, confusion, memory problems, dry mouth, nausea, constipation

Prescription-only benzodiazepine; can cause dependence, abuse and withdrawal—use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. Do not stop suddenly (risk of withdrawal, rebound anxiety, seizures). May cause sedation and psychomotor impairment—avoid driving/operating machinery. Use with caution in elderly, depression/suicidality, history of substance use disorder, hepatic impairment, respiratory disease/sleep apnea. Risk of severe sedation/respiratory depression when combined with opioids, alcohol or other CNS depressants.

Alcohol and other CNS depressants (opioids, sedating antihistamines, antipsychotics) increase sedation/respiratory depression; CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin/erythromycin, ritonavir, grapefruit juice) can increase alprazolam levels; CYP3A4 inducers (carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin, St John’s wort) can reduce effect; additive hypotension/sedation with other anxiolytics/sleeping pills

Store at or below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
