Monograph
Azithromycin 200 mg/5 mL (as azithromycin dihydrate) oral suspension
Bacterial infections of the respiratory tract (pharyngitis/tonsillitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia), ear infections (otitis media), skin and soft tissue infections; as prescribed for susceptible organisms
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This stops bacterial growth and helps the immune system clear the infection.
Oral suspension: Shake well before use. Measure the dose with a dosing spoon/cup/syringe. Can be taken with or without food (take after food if stomach upset occurs). Complete the full course as prescribed; do not skip doses.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, rash, taste disturbance
Schedule H: use only on prescription. Not for viral infections (cold/flu). Use with caution in liver disease, history of jaundice/hepatic dysfunction with azithromycin, myasthenia gravis, and in patients with QT prolongation/arrhythmias or low potassium/magnesium. Stop and seek medical help if severe diarrhea, allergic reaction, or signs of liver injury occur (yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine).
Antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (separate dosing), warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk/monitor INR), antiarrhythmics and QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, quinolones, certain antipsychotics), digoxin (may increase levels), cyclosporine (monitor levels), ergot derivatives (avoid)
Store below 25°C, protect from light and moisture. Keep tightly closed and out of reach of children. If reconstituted, store as per label and discard any unused suspension after the recommended period.
