Before you take it
Consult doctor (generally considered safe when prescribed).
Use with caution (alcohol may worsen stomach upset and illness; avoid heavy drinking).
Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as upper and lower respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis/tonsillitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia), ear infections (otitis media), skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections (e.g., uncomplicated chlamydial infections) as prescribed.
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This stops growth of susceptible bacteria and helps clear infection.
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed; usually once daily for a fixed course. Can be taken with or without food (take after food if stomach upset occurs). Swallow with water and complete the full course; avoid taking antacids containing aluminium/magnesium within 2 hours of the dose.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, rash
Use only for bacterial infections; misuse can cause resistance. Use with caution in liver disease, history of jaundice/hepatitis with azithromycin, myasthenia gravis, and in patients with risk of QT prolongation/arrhythmias (e.g., low potassium/magnesium, existing heart rhythm problems). Seek urgent care for severe allergic reaction, severe/persistent diarrhoea (possible C. difficile), or signs of liver injury (yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine).
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk—monitor INR), antiarrhythmics/QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, quinidine, certain antipsychotics/fluoroquinolones), digoxin (increased levels), cyclosporine, nelfinavir, ergot derivatives (avoid), aluminium/magnesium antacids (reduce absorption—separate dosing).
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
