Bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis/tonsillitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia), ear infections (otitis media), skin and soft tissue infections, certain sexually transmitted infections (e.g., uncomplicated chlamydial urethritis/cervicitis) as prescribed
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This stops growth of susceptible bacteria and helps clear the infection.
Take by mouth as directed by the doctor. Usually taken once daily; swallow whole with water. Can be taken with or without food (take after food if stomach upset occurs). Complete the full prescribed course; do not skip doses.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, rash
Use only for suspected/confirmed bacterial infections (not for viral cold/flu). Inform doctor if you have liver disease, history of jaundice with azithromycin, heart rhythm problems/long QT, low potassium/magnesium, myasthenia gravis, or severe diarrhea. Stop and seek care for allergic reaction (swelling, breathing trouble), severe skin rash, persistent watery/bloody diarrhea (possible C. difficile), or palpitations/fainting. Dose adjustment/monitoring may be needed in hepatic impairment.
Antacids containing aluminum/magnesium (reduce absorption—separate by at least 2 hours), warfarin/other anticoagulants (↑ bleeding risk—monitor INR), antiarrhythmics and other QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, quinolones, antipsychotics), digoxin (↑ levels), cyclosporine, statins (rare myopathy risk), ergot derivatives (avoid)
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
