Uses & Benefits
Hypertension (high blood pressure), Angina pectoris (chest pain), Heart failure (stable chronic), Control of heart rate in tachyarrhythmias/palpitations, Secondary prevention after myocardial infarction (as advised by doctor)
How It Works
Metoprolol is a cardioselective beta-1 blocker that reduces the effects of adrenaline on the heart. It slows heart rate and decreases force of contraction, lowering blood pressure and reducing myocardial oxygen demand.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually once daily for extended-release tablets. Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew. Can be taken with or without food, but take at the same time each day. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Side Effects
Tiredness, dizziness, slow heart rate (bradycardia), low blood pressure, headache, nausea, cold hands/feet, shortness of breath, sleep disturbances
Warnings & Precautions
Do not stop abruptly (may worsen angina or cause rebound hypertension). Use with caution in asthma/COPD (may cause bronchospasm), diabetes (may mask low sugar symptoms), thyroid disorders, peripheral vascular disease, and in patients with slow heart rate, heart block, or severe heart failure unless advised. Monitor blood pressure and pulse regularly. May cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected.
Drug Interactions
Verapamil, diltiazem (risk of bradycardia/heart block), digoxin, amiodarone/other antiarrhythmics, clonidine (withdrawal interaction), other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), insulin/oral antidiabetics (masked hypoglycemia), NSAIDs (may reduce antihypertensive effect), CYP2D6 inhibitors like fluoxetine/paroxetine/quinidine (may increase metoprolol levels)
