Treatment of hypercholesterolaemia (high LDL cholesterol) and mixed dyslipidaemia, reduction of cardiovascular risk (heart attack/stroke) in appropriate patients, adjunct to diet and lifestyle changes

Rosuvastatin is an HMG‑CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that reduces cholesterol synthesis in the liver. It increases LDL receptor activity, lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and modestly raising HDL cholesterol.

Take as directed by the physician, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water; continue diet/exercise measures and do not stop without medical advice.

Headache, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, dizziness, muscle pain (myalgia), weakness, increased liver enzymes

Prescription-only statin. Seek urgent care if unexplained muscle pain/tenderness/weakness occurs (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis, higher with high dose, kidney problems, hypothyroidism, elderly). Liver disease or persistent transaminase elevations: use with caution; periodic liver function tests may be needed. Contraindicated in active liver disease and during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use caution in severe renal impairment and in patients with heavy alcohol use.

Cyclosporine (contraindicated/avoid), gemfibrozil and other fibrates (increased myopathy risk), niacin (increased myopathy risk), protease inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir combinations) may increase rosuvastatin levels, warfarin and other coumarin anticoagulants (may increase INR—monitor), antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (reduce absorption—separate dosing), ezetimibe (additive effects—monitor for muscle symptoms)

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
