Prevention and treatment of dehydration due to diarrhea, vomiting, heat exhaustion, excessive sweating; fluid and electrolyte replacement
ORS provides an optimal balance of glucose and electrolytes to enhance sodium and water absorption via intestinal glucose-sodium co-transport. This restores hydration and corrects electrolyte loss during diarrhea or vomiting.
Dissolve the entire sachet in the specified amount of clean drinking water as per pack (commonly 200 ml or 1 L depending on sachet size). Stir until fully dissolved; do not add sugar or salt. Sip frequently; use within 24 hours (discard leftover). Continue feeding/breastfeeding.
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating (usually if taken too fast)
Seek medical help if severe dehydration, persistent vomiting, blood in stool, high fever, very little urine, lethargy, or diarrhea in infants/elderly. Use caution in severe kidney disease or heart failure where fluid/salt intake is restricted. Do not prepare with milk, juice, or carbonated drinks.
No clinically significant drug interactions; may affect timing of some oral medicines if vomiting persists
Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture. Prepared solution should be kept covered and used within 24 hours.
