Short-term treatment of anxiety disorders, panic attacks/panic disorder, anxiety associated with depression; sometimes used short-term for insomnia related to anxiety (as prescribed).

Etizolam is a thienodiazepine that enhances the effect of GABA at the GABA-A receptor, producing a calming effect on the brain. This reduces anxiety, induces sedation and relaxes muscles.

Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually in the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. May be taken with or without food; if it causes stomach upset, take with food. Avoid driving or operating machinery after taking.

Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, impaired coordination, confusion, slurred speech, headache, nausea, dry mouth, memory problems

Prescription-only; can cause dependence, tolerance and withdrawal—do not stop suddenly. May cause excessive sedation and respiratory depression, especially with alcohol/opioids/other sedatives. Use with caution in elderly, liver/kidney impairment, depression, history of substance use disorder, and in respiratory diseases (COPD, sleep apnea). May impair alertness—avoid driving. Not recommended for long-term use.

Alcohol, opioids (e.g., tramadol, morphine), other benzodiazepines/sedatives, sleep medicines, antihistamines (e.g., cetirizine, chlorpheniramine), antipsychotics, antidepressants, anticonvulsants; CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir, grapefruit juice) may increase levels; CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin) may reduce effect.

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
