Treatment of Parkinson’s disease, as monotherapy in early Parkinson’s disease or as add-on to levodopa in patients with motor fluctuations (wearing-off).
Rasagiline is a selective, irreversible monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) inhibitor. It increases dopamine levels in the brain by reducing dopamine breakdown, improving motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
Oral tablet; take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food. Do not stop or change dose without medical advice.
Headache,dizziness,insomnia,nausea,dyspepsia,abdominal pain,arthralgia,back pain,orthostatic hypotension,dry mouth
Prescription medicine. Risk of hypertensive crisis with tyramine-rich foods or interacting drugs; follow diet/medicine advice. May cause dizziness or orthostatic hypotension—use caution while driving/standing up. Watch for serotonin syndrome when combined with serotonergic medicines. Use caution in hepatic impairment; avoid in severe liver disease. Report hallucinations, impulse-control disorders, or worsening dyskinesia (especially with levodopa).
SSRIs/SNRIs/TCAs (serotonin syndrome risk),MAO inhibitors or linezolid/methylene blue (contraindicated),meperidine/tramadol/methadone (serious reactions),dextromethorphan (avoid),sympathomimetics/decongestants (hypertension risk),ciprofloxacin and other CYP1A2 inhibitors (increase rasagiline levels),levodopa (may increase dyskinesia)
