Treatment of tuberculosis (as part of combination anti-TB therapy), leprosy (in combination), certain serious bacterial infections as per physician advice
Rifampicin is a rifamycin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, blocking RNA synthesis. This prevents bacterial multiplication and helps clear susceptible infections, especially Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Usually taken orally on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after food) with water; take at the same time each day. For TB, it must be used in combination with other anti-tubercular medicines; do not stop early.
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, tiredness, rash/itching, flu-like symptoms, orange-red discoloration of urine/tears/sweat, increased liver enzymes
Prescription-only anti-tubercular medicine. Risk of liver toxicity—use caution in liver disease, alcoholism, elderly, or when used with other hepatotoxic drugs; monitor liver function. May cause severe allergic reactions, thrombocytopenia or kidney problems rarely—seek medical help for unusual bleeding/bruising, severe rash, jaundice, dark urine, persistent vomiting or abdominal pain. Can stain soft contact lenses due to orange-red body fluid discoloration. Adherence is critical in TB to prevent resistance.
Strong enzyme inducer—reduces effect of oral contraceptives, warfarin/acenocoumarol, many antiretrovirals (protease inhibitors, some NNRTIs), azole antifungals (ketoconazole/itraconazole), macrolides, doxycycline, corticosteroids, antidiabetics (sulfonylureas), anticonvulsants (phenytoin), digoxin, cyclosporine/tacrolimus, statins, benzodiazepines; increased liver risk with isoniazid and alcohol
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
