Relief and prevention of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma and COPD (including chronic bronchitis and emphysema); prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm
Salbutamol is a short-acting selective beta-2 agonist (SABA). It relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, leading to rapid bronchodilation and relief from wheeze, chest tightness and shortness of breath.
For inhalation use only via metered dose inhaler. Shake well before each puff; inhale through the mouth as you press the canister, then hold breath ~10 seconds. Use as prescribed; can be used with or without food; using a spacer is recommended for better delivery. Rinse mouth after use if advised.
Tremor, headache, palpitations, tachycardia, nervousness, throat irritation, cough, muscle cramps, nausea, dizziness
Schedule H medicine—use under medical supervision. Do not exceed prescribed dose; overuse may worsen asthma control and can cause serious heart effects and low potassium. Seek urgent care if relief is inadequate or symptoms worsen. Use with caution in heart disease, arrhythmias, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, seizure disorders, and in patients prone to hypokalemia. Use carefully with other sympathomimetics. Paradoxical bronchospasm can occur—stop and seek medical advice if breathing worsens immediately after use.
Non-selective beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol) may reduce effect and provoke bronchospasm; diuretics, corticosteroids and xanthines (theophylline) increase risk of hypokalemia; MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants may increase cardiovascular effects; digoxin levels may decrease; other adrenergic bronchodilators may increase side effects
Store below 25°C, protected from direct sunlight and heat. Do not freeze. Keep inhaler canister away from open flame/heat; pressurised container—do not puncture or incinerate. Keep out of reach of children.
