Treatment and prevention of bleeding due to increased fibrinolysis such as heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), bleeding after dental procedures in hemophilia, epistaxis, and other mucosal/surgical bleeding as advised by a doctor
Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic that blocks the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin and inhibits plasmin binding to fibrin. This stabilizes formed blood clots and reduces excessive bleeding.
Take by mouth as prescribed by the physician, with or without food (preferably after food to reduce stomach upset). Swallow tablet whole with water; do not exceed the prescribed dose and duration. Dose is condition-specific (e.g., for heavy menstrual bleeding usually taken for a few days during menstruation).
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, back pain, nasal/sinus symptoms, fatigue
Risk of blood clots: use with caution in patients with history of thromboembolism (DVT/PE), thrombophilia, stroke, or heart attack; avoid use with combined hormonal contraceptives unless advised. Seek urgent care for chest pain, shortness of breath, leg swelling/pain, sudden vision changes. Use caution in kidney impairment (dose adjustment needed). Avoid in active intravascular clotting; contraindicated in subarachnoid hemorrhage (may increase cerebral edema/infarction). Visual disturbances can occur—stop and consult doctor; eye examination may be needed for long-term use.
Combined hormonal contraceptives (increased thrombosis risk), factor IX complex concentrates/anti-inhibitor coagulant complexes (thrombosis risk), thrombolytics such as alteplase/streptokinase (reduced effect), other procoagulants/antifibrinolytics
