Uses & Benefits
Treatment of diabetes mellitus (Type 1 and Type 2) to control blood glucose levels when insulin therapy is required
How It Works
This is a premixed human insulin containing short-acting regular insulin for mealtime glucose control and intermediate-acting NPH insulin for basal control. It increases peripheral glucose uptake and reduces hepatic glucose production, thereby lowering blood sugar.
Directions for Use
For subcutaneous injection using the prescribed insulin device (cartridge/pen compatible as advised). Dose and timing are individualized; commonly given 1–2 times daily, usually 30 minutes before meals. Roll/tilt gently to resuspend before use; do not shake vigorously. Do not use intravenously.
Side Effects
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), injection site pain/redness/swelling, weight gain, oedema, lipodystrophy, allergic reactions (rash/itching), low potassium (hypokalaemia)
Warnings & Precautions
Risk of severe hypoglycaemia—monitor blood glucose and carry fast-acting sugar. Use with caution in kidney or liver impairment, elderly, irregular meal intake, or increased physical activity. Do not use if solution shows clumps/frosting or is not uniformly milky after resuspension. Rotate injection sites to prevent lipodystrophy. Dose may need adjustment during illness, stress, surgery, or change in diet/exercise. Seek urgent help for severe allergy or recurrent hypoglycaemia.
Drug Interactions
Other antidiabetics (sulfonylureas, metformin) may increase hypoglycaemia risk; beta-blockers may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms; corticosteroids, thiazide diuretics, thyroid hormones, sympathomimetics can raise blood glucose; ACE inhibitors may enhance glucose-lowering; alcohol can increase hypoglycaemia risk; pentamidine may cause hypo- then hyperglycaemia.
Storage Instructions
Store refrigerated at 2–8°C, do not freeze. Protect from light. Once in use, store as per label (often below 25–30°C) and use within recommended in-use period; keep away from heat and moisture.
