Type 2 diabetes mellitus (to improve glycaemic control along with diet and exercise); may be used with other antidiabetic medicines as prescribed.
How It Works
Empagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor that reduces glucose reabsorption in the kidneys. It increases urinary glucose excretion, thereby lowering blood glucose and causing mild diuresis.
Directions for Use
Tablet for oral use. Take once daily as prescribed, preferably at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow whole with water; do not crush/chew. Maintain adequate hydration.
Side Effects
Increased urination, thirst, urinary tract infection, genital fungal infection (vulvovaginitis/balanitis), dizziness, low blood pressure, hypoglycaemia (when used with insulin or sulfonylureas), nausea
Warnings & Precautions
Not for type 1 diabetes; risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (can occur even with near-normal glucose)—seek urgent care for nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid breathing. Can cause dehydration and hypotension, especially in elderly, on diuretics, or with low BP; maintain fluids. Monitor kidney function; avoid/initiate with caution in renal impairment as per clinician advice. Higher risk of genital mycotic infections and UTIs; maintain hygiene and report symptoms. Temporarily withhold before major surgery/acute serious illness or prolonged fasting to reduce DKA risk. Use caution in patients with history of ketoacidosis.
