Treatment of depression, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)
Paroxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It increases serotonin levels in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake in nerve synapses, helping improve mood and reduce anxiety and panic symptoms.
Oral tablet (controlled-release). Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily, preferably in the morning; can be taken with or without food. Swallow whole—do not crush, break, or chew. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Nausea, dry mouth, dizziness, headache, sleepiness, insomnia, sweating, constipation, diarrhea, decreased appetite, tremor, sexual dysfunction
Prescription-only antidepressant. Risk of worsening depression or suicidal thoughts, especially in young adults—monitor closely. Do not stop abruptly (withdrawal symptoms). May cause serotonin syndrome (agitation, fever, sweating, diarrhea) especially with other serotonergic drugs. Can increase bleeding risk (with NSAIDs/anticoagulants). Use caution in seizure disorder, bipolar disorder (risk of mania), glaucoma (may precipitate angle-closure), liver/kidney impairment, and elderly (hyponatremia/SIADH). May impair driving due to drowsiness/dizziness.
MAO inhibitors/linezolid/methylene blue (contraindicated—serotonin syndrome), other serotonergic drugs (triptans, tramadol, lithium, St John’s wort), anticoagulants/antiplatelets/NSAIDs (bleeding risk), other CNS depressants (increased drowsiness), CYP2D6 substrates such as tricyclic antidepressants/antipsychotics and some beta-blockers (may increase their levels), tamoxifen (reduced activation/effect), alcohol (additive CNS effects)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), in a dry place away from moisture and direct light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
