Before you take it
Not recommended (consult doctor; insulin is usually preferred during pregnancy).
Avoid (can increase risk of hypoglycaemia and unpredictable blood sugar changes).
Monograph
Glimepiride 2 mg (tablet)
Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control (alone or with other antidiabetic medicines as prescribed).
Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells by closing ATP-sensitive potassium channels. This increases insulin secretion and helps lower blood glucose levels, mainly in type 2 diabetes.
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with breakfast or the first main meal. Swallow tablet with water; do not skip meals to reduce risk of low blood sugar. Dose is individualized based on blood glucose/HbA1c; follow doctor’s advice for titration.
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), dizziness, headache, nausea, stomach upset, weight gain, skin rash/itching
May cause hypoglycaemia—risk increases with missed meals, excessive exercise, alcohol, or dose errors; carry a fast-acting sugar source. Use with caution in kidney or liver impairment and in elderly; dose adjustment/monitoring may be needed. Inform doctor if you have G6PD deficiency (risk of hemolysis) or sulfonamide allergy. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. If symptoms of severe allergy (swelling, breathing difficulty) or jaundice occur, seek medical help.
Other antidiabetics/insulin (increased hypoglycaemia), alcohol (unpredictable glucose effects), beta-blockers (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), azole antifungals (e.g., fluconazole), macrolides (e.g., clarithromycin), quinolones, NSAIDs/salicylates, warfarin, ACE inhibitors (may enhance effect), corticosteroids/thiazide diuretics/thyroid hormones (may increase blood glucose), rifampicin/phenytoin (may reduce effect).
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
