Uses & Benefits
Type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve blood glucose control along with diet and exercise, especially when control is inadequate with metformin alone or combination therapy is required
How It Works
Teneligliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor that increases incretin levels (GLP-1, GIP), thereby increasing insulin release and decreasing glucagon in a glucose-dependent manner. Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production and improves peripheral insulin sensitivity, reducing blood glucose levels.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Usually taken once daily with food (preferably with evening meal) to reduce stomach upset; if it is an extended-release tablet, swallow whole—do not crush/chew/split. Monitor blood glucose regularly.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, nasopharyngitis, hypoglycaemia (especially with insulin/sulfonylureas), taste disturbance
Warnings & Precautions
Prescription-only antidiabetic. Metformin may rarely cause lactic acidosis—risk increases with kidney impairment, dehydration, severe infection, alcohol use, heart/liver failure; assess renal function before and during therapy. Avoid/use with caution in severe renal impairment; temporarily stop around iodinated contrast procedures and major surgery as advised. DPP-4 inhibitors can rarely cause pancreatitis or severe joint pain; seek medical help for severe abdominal pain. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
