Monograph
Azithromycin 100 mg/5 mL (as azithromycin dihydrate) oral suspension
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as acute otitis media, acute bacterial sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, community-acquired pneumonia, acute bronchitis exacerbations, and skin/soft tissue infections (as prescribed).
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This stops growth of susceptible bacteria and helps clear the infection.
Oral suspension. Reconstitute with boiled and cooled water up to the mark; shake well before each dose. Give the dose exactly as prescribed (often once daily), with or without food (give after food if stomach upset). Use a measuring syringe/cup; complete the full course.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, rash
Use only for bacterial infections (not viral). Inform doctor if history of allergy to azithromycin/erythromycin/macrolides, liver disease, jaundice with prior antibiotic use, myasthenia gravis, or heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation). Seek urgent care for severe diarrhoea, allergic reactions, or signs of liver injury (yellow eyes/skin, dark urine). Dose adjustment/monitoring may be needed in hepatic impairment.
Antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (separate dosing), warfarin/other anticoagulants (bleeding risk/INR monitoring), digoxin (increased levels), cyclosporine, antiarrhythmics/QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, quinolones, some antipsychotics), ergot derivatives (avoid), statins (rare myopathy risk)
Store dry powder at room temperature away from moisture and light. After reconstitution, store as per label (commonly below 25°C; do not freeze) and use within the advised period; keep bottle tightly closed and shake well before use.
