Type 2 diabetes mellitus (to control high blood sugar), especially in overweight patients; used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines along with diet and exercise
How It Works
Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and decreases absorption of glucose from the intestine. It also improves insulin sensitivity, helping body tissues use glucose better, thereby lowering blood sugar.
Directions for Use
Take orally as advised by the doctor, preferably with or after meals to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the sustained-release tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew, or break. Take at the same time each day and follow diet/exercise advice; monitor blood glucose regularly.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, metallic taste, flatulence, headache, vitamin B12 deficiency (with long-term use)
Warnings & Precautions
Risk of lactic acidosis (rare but serious), especially in kidney impairment, severe dehydration, sepsis, hypoxia, or excessive alcohol intake. Use with caution in liver disease and in elderly patients. Kidney function (eGFR/serum creatinine) should be assessed before and during therapy; dose adjustment/avoidance may be needed in renal impairment. Temporarily stop before iodinated contrast studies and major surgery as advised by doctor.
