How to choose
Texture is the deciding factor: 'gel', 'aqua gel', 'emulgel' or 'matte finish' on the label means the base is water-light and won't clog. SPF 30 is the daily minimum; SPF 50 is worth it for outdoor commutes. Look for PA+++ or higher for UVA (the ageing and pigmenting rays). 'Non-comedogenic' matters on acne-prone skin — dermatology-channel brands (Acne UV, La Shield, Photostable, Rivela) formulate specifically for this and are what skin doctors in India actually prescribe alongside acne treatment. Tinted variants double as light coverage and skip the white cast that mineral filters leave on Indian skin tones. Quantity beats brand: a proper application is about half a teaspoon for face and neck, reapplied every 3-4 hours outdoors. If you're on acne treatment (retinoids, benzoyl peroxide), sunscreen isn't optional — those actives make skin photosensitive.
Who really needs this
Everyone with oily or combination skin who has abandoned sunscreens for feeling sticky. Non-negotiable for anyone on acne treatment, anyone with pigmentation or dark spots (sun deepens both), and two-wheeler commuters. Also the single best anti-ageing spend at any age. If sunscreen still stings or breaks you out after switching to a gel dermatology brand, see a dermatologist — it may be seborrhoeic dermatitis or rosacea, not ordinary oiliness.
