Hydroxyzine is a first-generation antihistamine (H1 blocker) with sedative and anxiolytic properties. It reduces the effects of histamine to relieve itching/allergy symptoms and also depresses activity in certain areas of the central nervous system to reduce anxiety and induce calmness.
Take as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food. It may cause drowsiness; preferably take in the evening/at bedtime if advised and avoid driving or operating machinery. Do not stop or change the dose without medical advice.
Common side effects of Atarax 10 Tablet may include:
May cause significant drowsiness and impaired alertness—avoid driving/operating machinery. Use with caution in elderly, glaucoma, enlarged prostate/urinary retention, constipation, asthma/COPD, liver or kidney impairment. Risk of QT prolongation/abnormal heart rhythm—use caution in patients with heart disease, electrolyte imbalance or those on QT-prolonging medicines. Seek urgent care for palpitations, fainting, severe dizziness, allergic swelling or breathing difficulty.
