Capsule
Treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) such as difficulty in urination, weak urine stream, hesitancy, and frequent urination
Alfuzosin is an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker. It relaxes smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, reducing urinary outflow resistance and improving urine flow in BPH.
Oral capsule/tablet; take exactly as prescribed. Usually taken once daily after the same meal each day; swallow whole (do not crush/chew) especially if extended-release. If you feel dizzy, avoid driving until you know its effect.
Dizziness, headache, fatigue, postural hypotension, nausea, abdominal pain, nasal congestion, abnormal ejaculation
May cause sudden drop in blood pressure especially after first dose or when standing up (risk of dizziness/fainting); use caution in elderly and in patients with low blood pressure. Use with caution in liver impairment; dose adjustment/avoid in moderate to severe hepatic impairment. Inform doctor if you have heart disease, history of fainting, or are taking antihypertensives. Rare risk of priapism (painful prolonged erection) and intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during cataract surgery—tell your eye surgeon if you use/used alfuzosin.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, clarithromycin), other alpha-blockers, antihypertensives (additive hypotension), PDE-5 inhibitors (sildenafil/tadalafil/vardenafil—risk of low BP), nitrates, QT-prolonging medicines (use caution)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protect from moisture and light, keep in original pack and out of reach of children
