  • wound care
  • first aid
  • wound cleaning

Key benefits

  • Immediate care for minor injuries
  • Reduces the risk of wound infection
  • Inexpensive and immediately available

How Flagyl Gel works

This medicine combines 3 active ingredients: Metronidazole, Lidocaine and Chlorhexidine. Metronidazole kills or stops the growth of the bacteria causing your infection. Lidocaine supports the care of a minor injury or wound. Chlorhexidine kills germs on the skin and in a wound, reducing the chance of infection.

How to take Flagyl Gel

Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer and rub it in gently. Wash your hands before and after use, unless your hands are the area being treated. This is for use on the skin only — do not swallow it. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next application, skip the missed one — applying extra does not make up for it.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, severe loose motions and nerve symptoms. It is unlikely from external use. It is unlikely from skin use, but swallowing an antiseptic is dangerous and needs immediate medical attention. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Flagyl Gel

Most side effects of Flagyl are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Metallic taste
  • Loose motions
  • Stomach pain
  • Headache
  • Local irritation
  • Redness
  • Stinging
  • Stinging on application
  • Dryness
  • Staining of skin or clothing

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Finish the whole course even after you feel better. Do not drink any alcohol while taking metronidazole, ornidazole or tinidazole, or for the period after the course that your doctor states — the combination causes severe flushing, vomiting and a racing heart. Report severe or watery loose motions during or after the course rather than treating them yourself. Tetracyclines stain developing teeth and are avoided in young children and in pregnancy. Antibiotics do not work against colds, flu or most sore throats, which are caused by viruses. For external use only, unless the pack says otherwise. See a doctor for a deep, dirty or heavily bleeding wound, an animal bite, or any wound showing signs of infection. Check that your tetanus cover is current after any dirty or penetrating wound. For external use only. Keep away from the eyes and the inside of the mouth and nose unless the product is made for that purpose. Do not use a strong antiseptic repeatedly on an open wound — clean running water and soap around the edges are usually better, and harsh antiseptics slow healing. See a doctor for a deep or dirty wound, an animal bite, a wound that will not stop bleeding, or one that becomes red, swollen, warm or discharges.

Do not take Flagyl if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for use on large burns or deep wounds without medical advice.

Interactions with other medicines

Antacids, iron, zinc and calcium reduce the absorption of tetracyclines — separate them by a couple of hours. Tell your doctor if you take a blood thinner. No significant interactions are expected.

How to store Flagyl Gel

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Close the cap tightly after each use. Keep out of the reach of children.

Expert advice for Flagyl Gel

Space the doses evenly and complete the course. Take tetracyclines with a full glass of water and stay upright for half an hour afterwards. Never use a leftover antibiotic, or someone else's, for a new illness. Clean the wound first, then apply, and keep it covered and dry. Clean the wound under running water first, then apply. Cover a clean wound with a sterile dressing and change it if it becomes wet or dirty.
