Ointment
Antiseptic for prevention and treatment of skin infections; used for minor cuts, wounds, abrasions, burns, infected dermatitis and ulcer care; wound dressing support
Povidone iodine slowly releases free iodine on the skin. Iodine rapidly kills a broad range of bacteria, fungi, viruses and some protozoa by oxidizing and iodinating microbial proteins and cell components.
For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer 1-2 times daily or as directed by a doctor; may be covered with a sterile dressing. Avoid contact with eyes and do not use on large areas for long periods unless advised.
Mild burning or stinging, itching, redness, skin irritation, dryness, allergic contact dermatitis, rash
Do not use if allergic to iodine/povidone. Use with caution in thyroid disorders, prolonged use over large areas, and in patients on lithium; may affect thyroid function and iodine tests. Avoid use in deep puncture wounds, severe burns, or large open wounds unless under medical supervision. Stop and seek medical advice if irritation, swelling or persistent pain occurs. Keep away from eyes, mouth and mucous membranes.
Lithium (increased risk of hypothyroidism), other topical antiseptics/oxidizing agents, enzymatic wound debriders (may be inactivated), hydrogen peroxide or silver-containing dressings (reduced activity/irritation possible)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protect from heat and light, keep container tightly closed and out of reach of children.
