Zoxan Eye Drops contains Ciprofloxacin (0.3% w/w). It belongs to the Fluoroquinolone antibiotic class of medicines.

How Zoxan Eye Drops works

Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. This stops bacterial DNA replication and leads to bacterial cell death.

How to take Zoxan Eye Drops

For ophthalmic use only. Instill the prescribed number of drops into the affected eye(s) as directed by a doctor. Wash hands before use, avoid touching the dropper tip, and keep the eye closed for 1–2 minutes after instillation. If using other eye medicines, keep a 5–10 minute gap. Remove contact lenses before use and reinsert only if advised.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Zoxan Eye Ointment, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause kidney injury, fits and heart rhythm disturbance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Zoxan Eye Drops

Most side effects of Zoxan are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Burning/stinging in eye
• eye irritation
• redness
• itching
• watery eyes
• blurred vision (temporary)
• foreign body sensation
• dry eye
• sensitivity to light

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Use only for bacterial infections; do not use for viral/fungal eye infections unless advised. Stop and seek medical help if rash, swelling, severe eye pain, vision changes, or allergic reaction occurs. Use with caution in pregnancy/breastfeeding and in children only on medical advice. Avoid wearing contact lenses during active infection. Do not share eye drops. Discard if solution changes color/has particles.

Do not take Zoxan if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Generally avoided in children and adolescents, in pregnancy, and in anyone with a history of tendon problems with these antibiotics.

Interactions with other medicines

Other topical ophthalmic medicines (additive irritation; separate dosing by 5–10 minutes). No significant systemic interactions expected with ophthalmic use, but inform doctor about all medicines.

How to store Zoxan Eye Drops

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from light. Do not freeze. Keep bottle tightly closed. Use within 4 weeks of opening or as per label.

Expert advice for Zoxan Eye Drops

Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment with Zoxan Eye Ointment even if you feel better. Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute, immediately after instilling the medication. Do not touch the tip to any surface, or to your eye, to avoid contamination. Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye to avoid dilution. Zoxan Eye Ointment may cause short term blurring of vision when first used. Use caution before driving or using machines. Do not wear contact lenses until your infection clears up. Make sure to Zoxan Eye Ointment use within 4 weeks of opening the medication.
