Treatment of endometriosis (to reduce pelvic pain and endometriosis lesions).
How It Works
Dienogest is a synthetic progestin. It suppresses ovulation and reduces estrogen stimulation of endometrial tissue, leading to thinning/decidualization of endometriotic implants and pain relief.
Directions for Use
Take as directed by the doctor, usually 1 tablet once daily at the same time each day. It may be taken with or without food. Swallow whole with water; continue daily without breaks unless advised.
Side Effects
Headache, breast tenderness, nausea, abdominal pain, acne, weight gain, mood changes/depression, decreased libido, irregular vaginal bleeding/spotting
Warnings & Precautions
Prescription medicine. Not recommended in pregnancy; rule out pregnancy before starting. Use caution in patients with history of thromboembolic disorders, severe liver disease, liver tumors, unexplained vaginal bleeding, depression, diabetes or cardiovascular risk factors. May cause irregular bleeding, mood changes and rarely blood clots; seek urgent care for chest pain, severe headache, vision changes, leg swelling or breathlessness. Not a contraceptive—use non-hormonal contraception if pregnancy prevention is needed. May reduce bone mineral density with long-term use in some patients; doctor may monitor.
Drug Interactions
Strong CYP3A4 inducers may reduce effect (rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, St John’s wort); CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase levels (ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir/cobicistat); use caution with other hormonal therapies/combined oral contraceptives; may affect glucose tolerance with antidiabetics (monitor).
