Constipation; hepatic encephalopathy (to reduce blood ammonia levels)
Lactulose is an osmotic laxative that draws water into the colon, softening stool and promoting bowel movements. In hepatic encephalopathy, it acidifies colonic contents and traps ammonia as ammonium, reducing absorption.
Take by mouth as directed, with or without food; measure dose using a cup/spoon. For constipation, effect may take 24-48 hours; drink adequate fluids. For hepatic encephalopathy, dose is adjusted to achieve 2-3 soft stools/day.
Flatulence, abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, diarrhea
Use cautiously in diabetes (contains sugars) and lactose intolerance/galactosemia. Overuse may cause diarrhea, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance; consult doctor if severe abdominal pain or no improvement. In hepatic encephalopathy, monitor electrolytes with prolonged use.
Antacids and antibiotics (may reduce effect), other laxatives (additive diarrhea/dehydration), drugs affected by low potassium (e.g., digoxin) if diarrhea occurs
