Treatment of depression (especially with anxiety); may be used for depressive illness as prescribed by a psychiatrist/physician
Dosulepin is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA). It increases levels of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain by inhibiting their reuptake, helping improve mood and reduce anxiety symptoms. It also has anticholinergic and sedative effects which may contribute to some side effects.
Take by mouth as directed by the doctor, usually once daily at night or in divided doses. Can be taken with or without food; taking at bedtime may reduce daytime drowsiness. Swallow whole with water; do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Drowsiness/sedation, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, dizziness, weight gain, nausea, sweating, tremor, palpitations, postural hypotension
Prescription Schedule H medicine. May cause drowsiness—avoid driving/operating machinery until you know the effect. Risk of suicidal thoughts/behaviour particularly in young adults at start or dose changes—seek urgent help if worsening mood or self-harm thoughts occur. Use with caution in heart disease, arrhythmias, recent myocardial infarction, epilepsy, liver impairment, glaucoma, urinary retention/prostatic hypertrophy, and elderly (falls/confusion). Do not use with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping them. Taper gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
MAO inhibitors (contraindicated), alcohol and other CNS depressants (increased sedation), other antidepressants/serotonergic drugs (risk of serotonin syndrome), QT-prolonging drugs (arrhythmia risk), antiarrhythmics, anticholinergics, antihypertensives (additive hypotension), cimetidine (may increase levels), enzyme inducers like carbamazepine/phenytoin (may reduce levels), tramadol (seizure/serotonin risk)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
