Monograph
Telmisartan (20mg)
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); may be used to reduce risk of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in high-risk patients as advised by a doctor.
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It blocks AT1 receptors, relaxing blood vessels and reducing aldosterone effects, which lowers blood pressure and reduces strain on the heart.
Take by mouth as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time. Can be taken with or without food; swallow with water. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Dizziness, headache, fatigue, nausea, back pain, diarrhoea, low blood pressure, increased potassium (hyperkalaemia)
Not recommended in pregnancy (especially 2nd/3rd trimester) due to risk of fetal harm. Use caution in kidney disease, renal artery stenosis, dehydration/low salt, liver impairment, or history of angioedema. Monitor blood pressure, kidney function and serum potassium; risk of hyperkalaemia increases with potassium supplements/salt substitutes. Seek help for severe dizziness/fainting or swelling of face/lips.
Potassium supplements/salt substitutes, potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone/amiloride), ACE inhibitors or aliskiren (higher risk of kidney impairment/hyperkalaemia), NSAIDs (reduced effect and kidney risk), lithium (increased lithium levels/toxicity), diuretics (additive low BP)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
