Monograph
Telmisartan 40 mg
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); reduction of cardiovascular risk (heart attack/stroke) in high-risk patients when appropriate.
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It blocks AT1 receptors, causing blood vessels to relax and reducing aldosterone effects, which lowers blood pressure and decreases strain on the heart.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow with water; do not stop abruptly without medical advice.
Dizziness, headache, fatigue, back pain, diarrhea, nausea, low blood pressure, increased potassium (hyperkalemia), increased creatinine
Not recommended in pregnancy (especially 2nd/3rd trimester) due to risk of fetal harm; stop and consult doctor if pregnancy occurs. Use caution in kidney disease, renal artery stenosis, dehydration/low salt states, liver impairment, and in elderly due to hypotension risk. Monitor blood pressure, kidney function and serum potassium. Seek urgent help for facial/lip swelling or breathing difficulty (angioedema).
Potassium supplements/potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, amiloride), ACE inhibitors or aliskiren (higher risk of kidney impairment/hyperkalemia; avoid in diabetes with aliskiren), NSAIDs (may reduce effect and worsen kidney function), lithium (increased lithium toxicity), diuretics (additive hypotension)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
