Monograph
Tablet
Management of hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris, chronic heart failure (stable), and rate control in certain tachyarrhythmias as prescribed; also used for prevention of recurrent myocardial infarction under medical supervision.
Metoprolol is a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic blocker. It reduces heart rate and the force of contraction, lowering blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand, thereby helping control angina and protecting the heart in selected patients.
Oral tablet; take exactly as prescribed, preferably at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food; if extended-release, swallow whole and do not crush or chew. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Dizziness, tiredness/fatigue, headache, slow heart rate (bradycardia), low blood pressure, nausea, diarrhea/constipation, cold hands/feet, sleep disturbance
May cause bradycardia, hypotension, and worsening of heart failure if not titrated properly; monitor pulse and blood pressure. Use with caution in asthma/COPD (may precipitate bronchospasm), diabetes (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), thyroid disease (may mask hyperthyroidism), peripheral vascular disease, and in patients with conduction disorders (AV block). Do not discontinue abruptly (risk of angina/MI/arrhythmias). Dose adjustment may be needed in hepatic impairment; consult doctor. Seek urgent help for wheezing, severe dizziness/fainting, swelling, or worsening breathlessness.
Other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), calcium channel blockers like verapamil/diltiazem (bradycardia/AV block), digoxin (bradycardia), antiarrhythmics e.g., amiodarone (conduction issues), clonidine (rebound hypertension if stopped improperly), NSAIDs (may reduce BP-lowering effect), CYP2D6 inhibitors e.g., fluoxetine/paroxetine/quinidine (increase metoprolol levels), insulin/oral antidiabetics (masked hypoglycaemia), beta-agonists (reduced bronchodilation).
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
