Treatment of edema (fluid retention) associated with heart failure, liver disease or kidney disease (including nephrotic syndrome); management of hypertension when prescribed.
Torsemide is a loop diuretic that blocks sodium and chloride reabsorption in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle. This increases urine output and reduces excess fluid, helping lower blood pressure and relieve swelling and breathlessness.
Take by mouth as advised by the doctor, usually once daily in the morning to avoid night-time urination. Can be taken with or without food; take at the same time each day. Do not stop or change dose without medical advice.
Increased urination, dizziness, headache, weakness, nausea, low blood pressure, dehydration, low potassium, low sodium, muscle cramps, increased uric acid
Monitor blood pressure, kidney function and electrolytes (especially potassium, sodium, magnesium). Risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance—seek care for severe dizziness, fainting, confusion, palpitations or muscle weakness. Use with caution in kidney or liver impairment, diabetes, gout/hyperuricemia, and in the elderly. May cause dizziness—avoid driving if affected. Inform doctor if you have allergy to sulfonamides/loop diuretics.
NSAIDs (may reduce diuretic effect and worsen kidney function), ACE inhibitors/ARBs (additive hypotension/renal effects), digoxin (higher arrhythmia risk if low potassium), lithium (increased lithium toxicity), aminoglycosides or other ototoxic drugs (increased ototoxicity risk), corticosteroids or amphotericin B (increase hypokalemia), other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
