Monograph
Tablet
Used to lower high cholesterol and triglycerides (dyslipidaemia) and to reduce risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events in at-risk patients.
Atorvastatin is an HMG‑CoA reductase inhibitor (statin). It reduces cholesterol synthesis in the liver, leading to increased LDL receptor activity and lowering LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides while modestly increasing HDL.
Tablet for oral use. Take once daily at the same time each day, with or without food, as prescribed. Continue diet and lifestyle measures; do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, indigestion, muscle pain (myalgia), joint pain, raised liver enzymes
Not recommended in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes. Seek medical help if muscle pain/weakness with fever or dark urine occurs (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis). Use with caution in elderly, kidney problems, hypothyroidism, heavy alcohol use, or history of muscle disorders. Liver function may be monitored; avoid/limit grapefruit juice.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin/erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, ritonavir/cobicistat and other HIV/HCV protease inhibitors), ciclosporin, gemfibrozil/other fibrates, niacin, colchicine, amiodarone, verapamil/diltiazem, digoxin, warfarin (monitor INR), large quantities of grapefruit juice
