Monograph
Dextromethorphan hydrobromide 10 mg + Guaifenesin 100 mg + Phenylephrine hydrochloride 5 mg per 5 ml
Symptomatic relief of dry or productive cough associated with common cold/upper respiratory tract infections; helps relieve chest congestion and nasal stuffiness.
Dextromethorphan suppresses the cough reflex by acting on the cough center in the brain. Guaifenesin loosens and thins mucus to make coughing out phlegm easier. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that constricts nasal blood vessels to reduce swelling and congestion.
Oral syrup. Shake well before use and measure with a cup/spoon. Usually taken 2–3 times daily as advised by a doctor; may be taken with or without food. Do not exceed the recommended dose and avoid using multiple cough/cold products together.
Drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, dry mouth, headache, nervousness, palpitations
Use with caution in hypertension, heart disease, thyroid disorders, diabetes, glaucoma, enlarged prostate/urinary retention, liver disease and in the elderly. May cause drowsiness—avoid driving or operating machinery if affected. Do not use in children unless prescribed; avoid use with/within 14 days of MAO inhibitors. Seek medical advice if cough persists >7 days, is recurrent, or is accompanied by fever, rash, breathing difficulty, or thick green/yellow sputum.
MAO inhibitors (contraindicated), other serotonergic drugs (SSRIs/SNRIs/TCAs, linezolid) may increase risk of serotonin syndrome with dextromethorphan, alcohol and CNS depressants increase sedation, antihypertensives may have reduced effect with phenylephrine, other decongestants/sympathomimetics may increase BP/heart rate, beta-blockers may increase vasoconstrictive effects
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
