Uses & Benefits
Treatment of intestinal worm (helminth) infections such as ascariasis (roundworm), hookworm, pinworm (enterobiasis), whipworm (trichuriasis), strongyloidiasis, taeniasis (tapeworm). Also used for certain tissue infections like hydatid disease and neurocysticercosis under medical supervision.
How It Works
Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic. It inhibits microtubule formation and glucose uptake in worms, leading to energy depletion and death of the parasite.
Directions for Use
Tablet; take as prescribed by doctor. Commonly taken as a single dose for many intestinal worm infections; take with food (fatty meal improves absorption). For some infections, repeat dosing or multi-day courses may be needed. Swallow with water; may be chewed if advised.
Side Effects
Nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, increased liver enzymes, rash
Warnings & Precautions
Schedule H: use under medical advice. Use with caution in liver disease; liver function monitoring may be needed for prolonged/high-dose therapy. Rarely can cause bone marrow suppression (seek care for fever, sore throat, unusual bruising). Avoid in known hypersensitivity to benzimidazoles. Treat household contacts and maintain hygiene to reduce reinfection when indicated.
Drug Interactions
Cimetidine may increase albendazole levels; dexamethasone and praziquantel may increase active metabolite levels; carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital and rifampicin may reduce effectiveness; avoid other hepatotoxic drugs during prolonged therapy when possible.
