Management of high cholesterol (hyperlipidaemia) and mixed dyslipidaemia; reduction of risk of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in at-risk patients along with diet and lifestyle changes.
Atorvastatin is an HMG‑CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that reduces cholesterol synthesis in the liver, lowering LDL and triglycerides and modestly raising HDL. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps reduce oxidative stress; it is sometimes co-prescribed as a supplement, though it is not a primary lipid-lowering agent.
Take by mouth once daily at a fixed time, with or without food, as prescribed. Swallow whole with water; continue diet/exercise and avoid missed doses; do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, constipation, muscle pain (myalgia), weakness, increased liver enzymes
Prescription medicine. Statins can rarely cause muscle injury (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis)—seek medical help if unexplained muscle pain/weakness, fever, or dark urine. Monitor liver function; use with caution in liver disease and in heavy alcohol use. Avoid in active liver disease. Not recommended in pregnancy; avoid during breastfeeding. Inform doctor about kidney disease, hypothyroidism, or if age >65 as these may increase muscle-risk.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, protease inhibitors), grapefruit juice, cyclosporine, gemfibrozil/other fibrates, niacin (high dose), warfarin (monitor INR), colchicine, amiodarone/verapamil/diltiazem (may increase statin levels)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
